The Wine-Lover dating a Beer-Lover dilemma

Driven to drink

I won’t open the last bottle alone.

My boyfriend Zeb and I are great for each other in every way but one – I drink wine and he drinks beer.

This seems like it should be a small difference, easily outweighed by all the other ways we are so compatible. But it is really putting a strain on our relationship. You see, I have a growing collection of very nice bottles of wine – nothing that needs to be cellared for 10 years, mind you, but wines that deserve to be shared with the people you love.

Zeb being one of the people I love quite a bit, I can’t think of anything I’d rather do than enjoy a fine bottle of Cabernet Franc over dinner with my man. After a failed attempt at this romantic scene, Zeb and I had to face the all-too-real truth that we are inherently different.

The only nice thing that Zeb can find to say about wine is that it has alcohol in it. He has stumbled upon a few sweet Rieslings and roses that he’s been able to enjoy, and sometimes after a few beers he’ll guzzle some port – this level of “appreciation” doesn’t do justice to the wines I’d like to share with him. His Coors Light-loving palate rejects tannin and acidity faster than you can say “Fosters.”

My stash of Farella-Park warrants
more than a sip and a grimace.

So I’m left with two options: I can become the happy lush and drink a bottle of wine by myself every time I get the hankering for some vino, or I can start throwing wine and cheese parties every week to move through some of my prized inventory.

I’m going with option two – if you’re in the Walla Walla area, be sure to come to my first Wine and Cheese party on July 21st at 6:30. I’ll be inside pouring delicious vino and slicing up some tasty cheese, whilst Zeb will probably be outside chugging lukewarm Bud.

I loved this article. Very clever. Does this mean that the house will always be ready for fun times… What cheeses will be in store to taste…

    Personally, I’d go for option 1!!!! :)

(And yes, I’m in a relationship with a beer drinker – but he does drink wine … the only time he can’t keep up is when it comes to the bubbly!).

@Alex It depends on the wine! Too rich of a red and I cease to be a happy lush and turn into a weepy lush! :)

I’ll be Option 1-ing it tonight with a bottle of Riesling!!
