I’ve got a fever… and the only prescription… is MORE PUPPIES!
When it came time to decide what the AW team wanted to do for community service, it didn’t take long for us to agree on animals.
Fortunately, or unfortunately, the Humane Society can always use more volunteers. So I dragged Zeb out of bed and to the Walla Walla Farmer’s Market on Saturday morning, where we were set to help man the Blue Mountain Humane Society’s booth and walk adoptable dogs to encourage interest and hopefully, adoptions.
I put dibs on walking Bunny, a Chihuahua-pug mix with the energy of Kelly Ripa after 3 cups of coffee. Zeb got the “wallflower” Sophie, a 6-year old beagle who was rather indiscriminate about where she went to the bathroom. Stacy got to walk the coolest dog, Chico, who was quite evidently ALL man. Crystal’s affinity for Jack Russell terriers quickly drew her to Charlie, who had a very loud opinion about everything (my ears are still ringing from that yapper). Dallas and his wife, Nicole were there walking one of the chow chow mixes, and Lloyd even brought along his dog, Pika, who quickly took to bossing the other pups around. Sasha used his “dog whisperer” skills on Pinny, a HUGE border collie, while Daniel “Not-a-fan-of-dogs” Greenlaw manned the booth with panache and skill.
We each took our dogs through the Farmer’s Market and up and down Main Street. I had no idea that Zeb was such a good salesman – “Need a dog?” “You look like you could use the companionship of a good animal.” “Hey, I see you lookin’!” Unfortunately, Zeb’s “charge” Sophie didn’t have the appeal of my friendly pug, Bunny. Several folks inquired about how much it was to adopt her, and little squealing girls were attracted to Bunny like a moth to a flame.
At the end of the day, we all had sweaty pits (the temperature reached 90 degrees by about 10 am) and a sense of accomplishment. Bunny ended up being adopted, but other dogs were carted back to the Humane Society, their fate uncertain. If you are an animal lover, there are lots of ways to get involved! Contact your local animal shelter for volunteer opportunities If you are interested in adopting one of these fantastic animals, check out Petfinder. You can search for adoptable pets in your area, complete with photos and a pet profile.
If you’ve got puppy fever like I do, then the Humane Society is the only prescription!

I am impressed with AW and the goal you made to help the humane society find homes for some of their animals. I hope as the heat settles down in the Walla Walla Valley and folks start thinking about lifting a nice glass of wine by the fireplace, they also consider adding a loving animal into this cozy scene. Cheers to your big hearts!
