Why do you enjoy wine?

Do you enjoy feeling superior when you are able to pick something out in a wine that others in your circle can’t?

The study on price relative to the enjoyment of the wine is a topic that has been bandied about in the wine blogosphere its fair share of times.  If you’d like another chance to jump in for discussion, Overcoming Bias is asking whether “any added enjoyment [is] just the pleasure of knowing you can distinguish something others cannot?”

Edgy behaviour in the wine world

One of my favorite blogs, Overcoming Bias, is a forum for people who seek to ask the right questions so as to “obtain beliefs closer to reality.” We all know how easy it is to be manipulated by the various facets of life in our society: media, politicians, and advertising being three vague and obvious examples.

Today, Robin Hanson, a tenured professor of economics at George Mason University, asked the following question.

In the art world something is “edgy” if it might well shock ordinary folks, but of course not in-the-know folks.  The idea seems to be that ordinary folks are shocked too easily by things that should not really be shocking.

The opposite concept, which I’ll call “anti-edgy”, is of something that does not shock ordinary folks, but should.  In-the-know folks are shocked, but most others are not.  Why does the world of art and fashion emphasize the edgy so much more than the anti-edgy?

I am interested in applying this question and the potential answers to a world closer to me, wine. And so I open this to you, dear readers. What wines, wine labels, or even wine industry behaviours do you think are anti-edgy? I’ll try to think of an example as I sip my morning coffee.

Celebrity Wine Fever: “This is not no ghetto Boone’s Farm”

Celebrity owned wineries are not a new phenomenon. But these days it seems like there are so many that somebody needs to get a list with some videos so we can remember why they’re famous in the first place. Let’s ignore the obvious ones like Francis Ford Coppola and unnecessary biographical information.

The following is a list of celebrity winery owners and a video documenting their fame

SearchMe.com

I’ve been having so much fun with this search tool that I just have to pass it on.

SearchMe.com provides pictures of the search results which you can then scroll through and narrow down by blog, retail, news, and focused niche categories. If you’re familiar with cover flow on Apple products you will find this very simple.

Try a search for the term ‘wine blog.’ The results aren’t as relevant as the ones Google has made its name on but it’s still a fun tool that brings the web a unique way to search.  I like the idea of using this to shop across multiple websites for an item you know you want.

Let me know how it works out for you!
